WINCHENDON – Walter J. Nugent, 89, of 103 Main Street, formerly of Ashland, died peacefully Wednesday evening, March 16th in The Highlands, Fitchburg, with his family at his side.
He was born in Medford, MA on March 1, 1927, son of the late James A. and Mary E. (Garrity) Nugent and was raised in Belmont, where he graduated from Belmont High School in 1944. He had been a resident of Winchendon since 2011.
Walter proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy during World War Two. Following his discharge, he entered electrical school and worked as an electrician for Blanchard Machinery and Varian Corporation in Lexington until his retirement. He later worked part time at Sears Hardware in Ashland.
Walter was a known as nice man, who loved his family, loved kids and liked his dogs. He also enjoyed camping and was a fan of the Boston Red Sox and UCONN Huskies Women’s Basketball.
His wife, Claire (McGowan) Nugent, died in 2009. He leaves two children, James F. Nugent and his wife Jane Malick-Nugent and Patricia A. Delay and her husband Douglas of Winchendon; three grandchildren, Cierra Nugent, Alex Alden and Daniel Delay; a brother Robert Nugent of SC, nieces and nephews. A brother, Rev. Francis Nugent, predeceased him.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, March 21st at 12 Noon in St. Vincent de Paul Church, 1 Forest Street, Baldwinville. Burial, with military honors will follow in Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, Winchendon
