WINCHENDON – Richard Olsen, 87, of 25 First Street, died peacefully Monday morning, May 5th in Baldwinville Nursing Home, Baldwinville.
He was born in Union City, New Jersey on April 8, 1927, the youngest of ten children of the late Andreas and Ingeborg (Jensen) Olsen and had lived in Winchendon since 1990. A graduate of Weehawken High School in New Jersey, Richard received his Bachelor of Science Degree from New York University.
Following his high school graduation, Richard proudly served his country during World War Two as a member of the United States Navy aboard the USS South Dakota. An accountant for many years, he had worked for several companies, including NBC, Plainfield, NJ Public Schools and Union County New Jersey ARC until his retirement.
Richard was a member of Winchendon Springs Lake Association and was a former trustee of Beals Memorial Library. He enjoyed reading books and listening to music.
He leaves his wife of 61 years, Jean M. (Reinhardt) Olsen; two children, Lisa J. Olsen-Billet and her husband Matthew of Ashburnham and Eric R. Olsen of Winchendon; a grandson, David L. Olsen-Billet of Ashburnham; one sister, Esther Michalson of S.C.; one cousin, Harriet Jensen of Willow Street, PA and many nephews and nieces. His eight other brothers and sisters preceded him in death.
Military funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 13th at 11 A.M. in Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 111 Glenallen Street, Winchendon. There are no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Beals Memorial Library Building Improvement Fund, 50 Pleasant Street, Winchendon, MA 01475.
